andy goldsworthy

how have i not know about this man and his work before now?!? i can't count the times my jaw dropped when watching this film. i literally gasped at the magnificence and the beauty. multiple times. rivers and tides - a documentary following andy goldsworthy. SEE THIS FILM.

"when i make a work, i often take it to its edge of collapse...and that's a very beautiful balance."

"what lies below the surface effects the surface."

"words do their job, but what i'm doing here says a lot more."

he makes sculptures in nature using only materials he has found within that particular environment. they are all changed by time. some are incredibly transient - covered or washed away within only moments of completion. at times, he will spend hours with the work - meticulously building, crafting, shaping - only to have it all collapse before he has even finished.

what an incredible lesson in patience and dedication...i am in awe.

thank you, andy.

keep the channel open.

“there is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. the world will not have it.

it is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. it is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. you do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. you have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. keep the channel open."

Here in the land of BRIDGING WOUNDS, we believe the human experience to be a great big experiment - our creative process is no exception. At our first work-in-progress showing, you’ll get a peak at what we’ve been up to and can opt to help us create the next phase by following directions like, “turn in a circle pausing every 90 degrees” and “chomp that gum into this microphone.” Think of it as a sort of ‘science lab of life experiences’ - we’ll give you a drum set wrapped in post-its and you give us a bit of your humanness.

even oragutans thrive on creative output

by 'towan' - the orangutan

last night i read an article in 'city arts' magazine about how, "artistic talent is not uncommon among primates in captivity, as it's a healthy way to keep them active and engaged." the particular one they write about here has been painting on canvas for 41 years. the writer also recently encountered an orangutan who, "immensely enjoyed working in crayon," and says that they all show different artistic talents. for instance, "most of the females are more interested in weaving activities. one female made a swing by stringing up a milk crate with some denim. another would rather paint on the wall or on a barrel (graffiti artist)." amazing.

now
can we start recognizing how vital creative output is for humans...?

the passage of time is relative - scientifically!!!

the fabric of the cosmos by brian greene is BLOWING MY MIND (thank you willy!) - and taking a very long time to read as i can't get more then a few pages without risking explosion. did you know that the speed of an object's motion through time and space must equal the speed of light when combined? meaning: because stationary objects aren't moving through space, they are devoting all of their motion to moving through time - they are moving through time at the speed of light. this also means that objects moving through space are moving proportionately slower through time. so when you are plummeting through space on an airplane, you are actually moving through time at a slower rate then when you are on the ground. at great speeds, this can even be measured using a stop watch. something moving extremely fast will experience the passage of time at a slower rate then something that is stationary.

i'm not usually one for exclamation points, but: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
